RAJA YOGA / KATONAH STYLE
This form of yoga has been developed over the last 20 years by Nevine Michaan and her teachers. It is a synthesis of Classical ( or Raja yoga*) with systems of natural laws and correspondences that serve as an image bank to help move the mind through the body and deepen experience. It provides a clear, yet powerful understanding of the mechanics of the body while encouraging an awareness of the Self.
This powerful class is for the novice as well as the advanced yogi. Private sessions are highly effective for recovery from illness or injury. (See yoga therapy in the healing services section for more information.) All students learn how muscles, bones, organs and glands interact and how the body’s energy system operates. With continued practice, you can expect increased bone mass, better balance, greater stability, increased range of motion and better organ tone. This creates a holistic pathway for self-investigation and personal transformation.

* Raja yoga is attributed mainly to Patanjali but has roots in Tantra, Taoism and Buddhism. It is one of the most influential schools of the yoga tradition. Raja yoga teaches us how to concentrate the energies of the mind and body to gain insight about ourselves, our world and ultimately, a reality beyond thought and image.
Basic Hatha
These classes are designed for new comers and those seeking a traditional basic level class. Hatha yoga addresses the two opposing forces in nature- the solar or contracting force and the lunar or expanding force. It unites these polarities by bringing you to an experience of a third force from which everything arises and dissolves.
This balances the flow of energy in your body. It stabilizes your nervous system, increases the strength and flexibility of muscle and bone and prepares you for pranayama and meditation. As your practice grows, you will experience more of the life changing aspects of yoga. However, from the very first class, you will know profound stillness.
Vinyasa
These classes are meditations in movement. The same postures you learn in Hatha are linked together in a series of flowing movements that rise and fall rhythmically. They emphasize strength and fluidity. These classes are more physically challenging than Basic Hatha. If you cannot modify your pace, we suggest you begin with Katonah or Basic.
Hatha Yoga- Rasa Style
Join Priti Robyn Ross in this gentle, mixed level class that blends the soft but deep work of Kripalu yoga, the chakra work of Prana yoga, and the chanting and toning of Rasa yoga. In this safe and nurturing class, connect with your deepest self and explore your personal journey toward health, vitality and peace of mind.
Chi-Gung Yoga
Chi-Gung is a system of gentle movements used by the Chinese to cultivate chi ( life force) and develop radiant health. It was brought to China by the Indian missionary Bodidharma and first taught to Chinese monks. It was believed to be the genesis of Chinese martial arts. This class explores the natural connections between Chi-Gung and hatha yoga. It is a gentle style, open to all levels.
Joining Yoga and Meditation
If asana practice is about inhabiting our bodies, relating to our physical form, conscious breathing and directing prana; then sitting meditation, taming the mind, is about a return to stillness and silence and a place out of which forms arise and return to. These two activities naturally inform and enrich one another. Explore the play of form and space in stillness and movement, through yoga postures and sitting meditation.
Cultivate a bigger view. Big Mind. Big Body. Big Heart.
Active Restorative Yoga and Meditation
This class is inspired by Anusara yoga, Kinetic Awareness and meditation practices. You begin with dynamic, invigorating postures that focus on alignment. Then you move to restorative, rejuvenating poses that open the joy and compassion of the heart chakra. Next, experience deep releases of tension with self-massage on balls of various sizes and firmness. You glide effortlessly into wakeful, active meditation. Finish with chanting and a sitting meditation. Discover how deep meditation can happen spontaneously and naturally.
Prenatal Yoga
Stay limber, tone your muscles, improve your balance and circulation with no impact on your joints. Learn to breathe deeply, relax, connect with your baby and your intuitive wisdom. Meet other pregnant women and become a part of our community of mothers and babies. A prenatal yoga class and a gentle cardiovascular program, like walking, is all you need to stay fit during your pregnancy. Many women credit prenatal yoga to shorter labor and easier deliveries. Our instructors are specially certified in prenatal yoga.
By the way, we also offer prenatal massage.
Pilates
These classes focus on developing core strength, good posture, fitness, grace, flexibility and freedom from injury. Unlike the original version ( which rigidly held the abdominals and used effortful movements), modern Pilates classes incorporate advances in physical therapy, spinal research and biomechanics to insure that each exercise is performed with optimal results and safety in mind. Our instructors are all certified and experienced. You get personalized instruction and results.
Strong Abs Strong Bones
This is a yoga class that targets the development of a strong core. Unlike many core classes that contribute to lumbar and cervical problems or over-develop a barrel-like abdominal wall, this class teaches you how to work safely with the correct level of intensity for each individual.
